ISMCP Case Studies

Resilient Pilot, an organisation with a mission of ‘Keeping Crew: Supported. Current. Connected’ can now add a Gold ISMCP Award to its list of credentials. Here we catch up with CEO Stuart Beech to find out more about why Resilient Pilot chose ISMCP as its excellence framework, and what went into their successful Gold application:

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

Hello, I’m Stuart Beech CEO, and Co-Founder of Resilient Pilot together with Karen Bath. I’m also an A380 long-haul pilot, ex teacher and very passionate about providing continuous learning and development opportunities for our aviation professionals.

Resilient Pilot was launched in 2020. Can you tell us more about the company and what you do?

We are a non-profit organisation born out of the Pandemic primarily consisting of very talented and dedicated volunteer pilots and specialist mentor/coaches who give up their spare time to support a full spectrum of global pilots and cabin crew. We just passed our 2nd year anniversary attaining Gold Accreditation for The EMCC ISMCP by providing blended virtual mentoring, coaching and developmental training support for our pilot community. We have evolved to deliver our flagship Virtual Resilience Development Programme adopting a competency based approach to our blended mentoring, coaching and training methodology.

What was your reason for choosing the EMCC accreditation?

It was a really nice story actually. I had been researching accrediting organisations about a year ago that focussed not only on coaching, but mentoring too. The EMCC immediately struck me as the right organisation, particularly sharing the same social enterprise values as Resilient Pilot. At the same time, we welcomed Sam Sloan to the organisation as a Specialist Mentor, now a Director here at Resilient Pilot, who already held an EQA programme to train mentor/coaches aligned to The EMCC competencies and principles. Sam has provided valuable guidance and supported us during the process, while training almost 50% of our team members to gain their individual accreditations. It seemed a natural pathway to partner with the EMCC and embark upon the journey to ISMCP Accreditation.

What does achieving the EMCC Global ISMCP mean to you at Resilient Pilot?

Wow……the Gold Accreditation really highlights the hard work and determination demonstrated by our passionate and talented team of volunteers, in particular, Sam Sloan and Karen Bath who have been instrumental ensuring we managed to organise the items required for accreditation. Resilient Pilot organically developed a total systems approach to mentoring, coaching and training, gaining advantage from significant downtime during the pandemic. The EMCC Global ISMCP accreditation elevates what we do and enhances our credibility to organisations and individuals wishing to partner or make use of our services.

What does the future hold for Resilient Pilot? What can we expect to see?

As with any mentoring or coaching journey, we are just embarking upon the start of ours with a huge amount of work to continuously improve and provide a world class Resilience Development System for our aviation professional community. We are about to implement pioneering software that will provide both organisation and confidential evidence for individuals providing objective data to tailor effective training and development for both our volunteers and members. We would like to take our model to other industries in the future, advocating a competency based approach to blended mentoring, coaching and developmental training to improve resilience and performance.

International Award for Mentoring Program for Students and Graduates at Istanbul University

The ODTUMIST (Middle East Technical University Istanbul Alumni Association) Mentoring Program has been awarded the highest GOLD standard ISMCP accreditation for its comprehensive mentoring program formation which enables METU students and graduates to form learning partnerships for their personal and career development through specialised and goal-oriented sub-mentoring programs for different target audiences:

  • Peer Mentoring: Support provided by 3rd or 4th year or post-graduate student mentors from METU to student mentees who are in their first year in the Ankara Campus to facilitate their adaptation to university life and Ankara.
  • Career Mentoring: Support provided by a graduate mentor who is experienced in the business life to 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student mentees of the Ankara Campus to raise their personal and career awareness.
  • Business and Life Mentoring: Support provided by graduate mentors to newly graduated mentees for their career and personal development.
  • Business and Life in the United Kingdom: Support provided by graduate mentors living in the United Kingdom to graduates who started living in the United Kingdom for their career, social and personal development.

The program works as an initiative of ODTUMIST Alumni Association Executive Board of Management and is available for students and graduates of METU bachelor’s and post-graduate programs. The program started in 2015 with a name and concept of e-mentoring and there is a wide engagement in the program. Now in 2022, it has completed 6 cohorts including those who are currently engaged in the program, has 232 mentors with 232 current mentees and 344 alumni mentors and 344 alumni mentees.

It was noted during the assessment by EMCC Global, that participants in the program truly feel like a big family as METU students & alumni. The heartfelt feeling of being a part of this family can be defined as the most significant and powerful drive of their motivation to support each other. Participants keep taking part in the program and in time mentees become mentors as well.

The program is managed by ODTUMIST MPWG (Mentoring Programs Working Group) which is committed to attaining the highest quality standards and reaching the best practices towards continuous improvement,  receiving the EMCC Global ISMCP Accreditation was one of the target goals that ODTUMIST MPW set itself to receive in 2022.

The EMCC Global verifier, Dayna Caceres said “ODTUMIST Mentoring Programmes for Students and Graduates is an outstanding example of an established, well-structured hybrid (majorly online) mentoring program design, execution and evaluation with dedication and commitment to remarkably high standards; the organisational approach to mentoring programme methodology is exemplary”.

The mentors are also receiving EMCC Global Foundation level EQA accredited training and are recommended for their EMCC Global Individual Accreditation EIA Professional Designation as well to ‘frame’ their ongoing aspiring leadership practice.

EMCC Global would like to say a big congratulations to Zeynep Berberoglu and Huray Boke and the whole ODTUMIST executive committee and sub-working group.

Zeynep Berberoğlu, on behalf of the ODTUMIST Executive Committee, said “Getting prepared for EMCC ISMCP accreditation was a wonderful learning and development opportunity in itself for the Mentoring Programmes Working Group. Working for a shared goal was very stimulating for all of us. We are honoured to be awarded the ISMCP GOLD by EMCC Global and hope to inspire other alumni associations and universities with our voluntary based mentoring programmes.”

International award for mentor programme that addresses gender equality for women entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries

A scheme that matches women entrepreneurs from low- and middle-income countries with professional mentors worldwide has been awarded an internationally benchmarked accreditation by EMCC Global for its high level of performance.

The Mentoring Women in Business Programme within the London-based Cherie Blair Foundation for Women sees women entrepreneurs working one-on-one with a dedicated business mentor, meeting via a bespoke online mentoring platform for two hours a month to work on personal and business goals, business plans, branding and marketing.

Since it was launched in 2010, the Mentoring Women in Business Programme has matched mentees and mentors in 105 countries, and in 2020 saw more than 1,500 people take part in the year-long mentoring programme. Participants have been able to address a global gender gap in entrepreneurship while growing knowledge, skills, networks and confidence.

Its success has been recognised with a Gold International Standard for Mentoring and Coaching Programmes (ISMCP Award) from Brussels-headquartered EMCC Global.

The ISMCP framework ensures programmes are designed to align with participant and business objectives, under the professional umbrella of the EMCC Global standards and its Global Code of Ethics.

EMCC Global Accreditation Verifier Hoang-Anh Thi Le said: “The CBFW has grown significantly since the early days of its inception supporting many thousands of female entrepreneurs globally to start and grow their businesses by leveraging the support of mainly corporate volunteer mentors. By partnering with locally based organisations, the programme has been able to provide a unique opportunity for women in low-middle income countries to access mentoring support from a pool of international mentors. I applaud the CBFW team on their dedication and hard work in meeting all the requirements of this rigorous assessment.”

The Cherie Blair Foundation for Women’s Mentoring Women in Business programme manager Jetske van Dijk said: “Going through this exercise has enabled the Mentoring team to take a moment to take stock and truly reflect on the nature and content of the programme in its entirety. As a team we are often delivery-focussed, and this reflection time has allowed us to look at the programme as a whole.”

ISMCP is a deep framework that supports cultural development and aligns personal and professional performance. It is awarded at bronze, silver and – the highest – gold level. Organisations holding an ISMCP accreditation with EMCC Global have shown their ability to define and articulate their clarity of purpose, to establish and support a strong coach and mentor network, to build in effective review and measurement and the ability for consistent and improving performance – all aligned within a strong code of ethics.

Denise Whitworth, VP Accreditation EMCC Global, said: “The Cherie Blair Foundation has shown that it is continually adapting in meeting the needs of women entrepreneurs, especially in times of global change. The team is clear about who they serve, the direction of travel and the evaluation criteria they are fulfilling to bring about global change. They deserve applause for this marvellous achievement.”

Catherine Duffy, general manager, Limerick at Northern Trust, said: “Our accreditation journey to date has provided us with the opportunity to pause and truly assess the effectiveness of our programme. It has enabled us to identify gaps, discuss them openly within the committee and agree on the optimum path to enhance our programme.

“By engaging with EMCC Global, we were able to learn more about the practicalities of mentoring best practices, openly discuss challenges and embrace opportunities to drive our programme further. “

Headquartered in Chicago, Northern Trust has offices in more than 20 countries and employs more than 20,000 people across the world. Its mentoring programme defines mentoring as a mutua relationship built on trust and respect, designed to develop skills, share knowledge and experiences, and advance both mentors and mentees along their professional paths.

The Northern Trust team was supported in its application by EMCC Global ISMCP Assessor Dayna Caceres and EMCC Global ISMCP workgroup lead Dr Julie Haddock-Millar.

Dayna said: “The team in Northern Trust were incredible to work with, quickly understanding the requirements. It was evident from early on in our conversations that they had a great programme with very strong processes in place. Well deserving of their Gold standard award and an exemplar for best practice.”

The Empower Mentoring Programme was launched in 2017 and has supported eight cohorts and more than 150 mentees. The Northern Trust Empower Mentoring programme is open to all staff at the middle management levels (second vice president and vice president) in Ireland. The intention of the programme is to provide the mentees with a framework and infrastructure to empower and enable dedicated focus on personal and professional development.

Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is a worldwide movement. Founded to save lives and speak out, MSF has helped tens of millions of people since 1971. The 13 founders have grown to over 37,000 staff, in over 60 countries on the frontline of emergency medical aid.

Donors are a vital part of the movement – 90 percent of our income coming from individual donations. This allows MSF to stay independent, neutral and impartial – and to access those in greatest need quickly.

MSF has helped millions of people since it was established in 1971. The movement has grown and MSF now work in over 60 countries around the world, with team ready for any new emergency.

MSF Associations

The staff ‘own’ and manage MSF through the MSF Associations. There are 24 Associations around the world. Most have an office that fundraises and recruits staff, like MSF UK.

Each association is attached to one of the five operational centres (OC). These are the offices which decide when, where and what medical care is needed. These centres are based in:
• Brussels, Belgium
• Paris, France
• Amsterdam, Holland
• Barcelona, Spain
• Geneva, Switzerland.

The OCs can act independently but all layers of MSF interconnect and work together in various ways, and are formally bound as one movement by a shared name, a shared commitment to the MSF Charter and principles, and shared membership of MSF International.
